Empowering Foster Children: SwagCycle’s Impact through Birth Brite Foster Closet

We recently sat down with Monique Zantop, Executive Director of Birth Brite Foster Closet, one of SwagCycle’s charitable partners. Read on to learn more about their important work and impact.

This post is part of a series highlighting charitable organizations that SwagCycle partners with to make sure that the branded merchandise that we help keep out of landfills ultimately ends up in the hands of individuals who can put it to good use. Follow along with us to learn more about our dedicated partners and the causes they serve.

Birth Brite Foster Closet is a nonprofit based in Jackson, Michigan, whose mission is to deliver hope and joy to children in foster care. Birth Brite offers a free “foster closet” where children in foster care and their families can “shop” for items including clothing, shoes, toys, diapers, wipes, hygiene items, and more.

SwagCycle recently helped facilitate a donation of branded promotional items to Birth Brite, which are being provided to individuals who participate in the organization’s programs.

“The items we have received are truly invaluable, as they go beyond their material value to have a profound impact on the youth we serve,” Zantop shared. “Each and every item helps to enhance comfort, safety, and sense of security while boosting self-esteem and reinforcing a sense of worth.”

The items that were donated to Birth Brite included clothing, office supplies, reusable water bottles, and electronics accessories. Zantop shared with us how these materials would be utilized by the individuals Birth Brite serves:

  • Clothing: Infant onesies, sweatshirts, and t-shirts may seem like ordinary articles of clothing, but for children entering foster care with nothing more than the clothes on their backs, these items can mean the world. They provide a clean, fresh start and a sense of dignity for children who may have experienced unimaginable challenges and disruptions in their young lives.
  • Office supplies: Items like notepads, pens, and clip boards help ensure youth have one less thing to worry about and can focus on their education and personal development.
  • Reusable items: Providing youth with their own drinking glasses and reusable water bottles can help them feel more independent and self-sufficient and can have long-term benefits beyond just cost savings. By promoting healthy hydration habits and reducing waste, these bottles can contribute to the overall health and well-being of the youth while supporting environmental sustainability.
  • Electronics: Battery packs can help foster connectivity for youth in foster care who may not have access to reliable charging sources for their devices. This can help them stay connected with their support systems such as friends, family members, and social workers.

“These items are more than just practical necessities — they foster a sense of community and connection that can be life-changing for those who may feel marginalized or isolated,” Zantop shared. “By helping the youth we serve feel more connected to the larger community, these items contribute to their mental health and well-being in a truly meaningful way. We are deeply grateful for these items and the impact they will have on the lives of the youth we serve.”

We look forward to continuing to collaborate with Birth Brite Foster Closet as they advance their mission of delivering hope and joy to children in foster care. You can learn more about Birth Brite and how to support their work at birthbrite.org.
